PHYs (Physical Layer Devices) connect via an MII (Media Independent Interface) to the Ethernet MAC (Media Access Controller). The MII interface is defined by the IEEE 802.3 standard so any manufacturers PHY can work with any MAC. Many processors contain an Ethernet controller or MAC, connecting a PHY via the MII interface is straight forward and simple. Other interfaces such as RMII (Reduced MII) and SMII (Serial MII) can be used, Micrel offers PHYs that support all of these interfaces.

Ethernet PHYs can be monitored and controlled via an MDIO (Management Data Input/Output) interface. Each PHY has an MDIO interface as defined by IEEE 802.3 with common register locations. Functions such as loop-back, power down, speed, duplex selection are among the many standard options available in the MDIO registers.
