Micrel Hot Swap Power Controllers - An Overview
Micrel’s hot-swap power controller products support the system requirement for high availability (24/7/365) operation in servers, cellular basestations, telecom & networking infrastructure equipment, and enterprise storage networks. These robust products allow customers to upgrade or replace system boards without having to remove system power. Offering products for primary- and secondary-side applications, Micrel’s family of hot-swap power controllers offers our customers a wide range of product choices uniquely suited for any power control application. This is accomplished by combining robust operation with industry-leading electrical performance to lower the overall system implementation cost.
Low-Voltage Products
Micrel Hot-Swap Products designed for low-voltage (or secondary side) applications such as dc/dc converter modules, network storage, and high-performance computing applications include the feature rich MIC2086, the MIC2583/83R, and the MIC2585. The MIC2585, Micrel’s first dual-channel hot-swap controller, was specifically designed for digital ASIC and DDR memory applications. Micrel also offers reduced feature set products, some of which are pin-for-pin functional equivalents to low-voltage power controller products from Linear Technology.
This portfolio also includes the award-winning* MIC2590B, the industry’s most integrated dual-slot hot swap power controller for PCI v2.x, PCI-X 1.0b, PCI-X 2.0, and CompactPCI applications. Leveraging Micrel’s expertise in power control and distribution, the MIC2590B packs ten power controllers, integrated power MOSFETs, and an SMBus interface into a space-saving 48-pin TQFP and was designed to support Intel’s Itanium™ 64-bit server platforms. To address next-generation two- and four-processor 32-bit server platforms compliant to the PCI Express power control standard, Micrel has also developed the industry’s first pair of next-generation dual-slot power controllers, the MIC2591B and the MIC2592B. The MIC2591B, like the MIC2590B, incorporates a multi-channel, multiplexed-input
D-S ADC supporting the Integrated Platform Management Interface standard (IPMI v1.0).

High-Voltage Products
For primary-side (or high-voltage) applications, Micrel has added 20 innovative products like the MIC2588 family and the MIC2587 family to the high-voltage hot swap product portfolio, addressing the +24V, +48V, and -48V power control applications for the telecommunications, data communications, and data storage equipment markets. The MIC2586/86R, the MIC2589/89R, and the MIC2595/95R are the industry’s first high-voltage, single-channel power controllers with multiple Power-is-Good outputs for sequencing and these products provide options for latch-off and auto-retry electronic circuit breakers. Micrel also offers reduced feature set products, some of which are pin-for-pin functional equivalents to high-voltage power controllers from Linear Technology and Maxim Integrated Products.
